Jan Brookes is more than an access advisor – she’s a passionate advocate, changemaker, and community connector with decades of lived and professional experience of disability driving everything she does.
Jan’s journey began as a nurse in the RAF, later moving on to studying for a Masters Degree from University of Derby in International Hospitality Management where her academic grounding fuelled a strong sense of purpose: to break down the barriers faced by disabled people in everyday life, especially on thee Isle of Wight. Determined to turn knowledge into action, Jan went on to found Isle Access, a charity organisation committed to improving access and inclusion across the Island. What started as a local initiative quickly became a vital voice for the community – offering practical support, resources, and a much-needed platform for awareness and change.
Under Jan’s leadership, Isle Access has worked with hundreds of local businesses, guiding them towards more inclusive practices – from accessible layouts and signage to disability confidence training. She’s also played a central role in assisting the island’s three major ferry operators – Hovertravel, Wightlink, and Red Funnel – helping them review and enhance their services for disabled passengers.
Jan’s impact stretches well beyond audits and checklists. She has produced mental health awareness films, coordinated accessible cycling groups, and actively hosts work placement students from the Isle of Wight College, providing valuable experience in community engagement and accessibility-focused projects.
From organising fundraisers to sourcing mobility equipment, facilitating training events, and championing inclusive tourism, Jan has consistently gone above and beyond to build a more accessible future. Her approach is always grounded in realism, empathy, and a deep belief in equality for all.
Now, through JB Accessibility – Training and Consultancy, Jan continues that mission – working one-on-one with organisations, schools, councils, and charities to deliver practical, professional, and personalised accessibility support.
